What affects the nitrogen retention in Tatra Mountains lakes’ catchments in Poland?

چکیده
The study of acidification and recovery of two lakes situated in the Polish Tatra Mountains, exposed to similar deposition of acidic substances but differing in altitude, catchment morphology, hydrology, and biodiversity is presented. Measurements were performed in 1992–1996 and 2001–2005. Simultaneously, research on the atmospheric deposition was carried out. The following physical and chemical parameters in lake water and precipitation were measured: pH, conductivity (K25), Ca2+, Mg2+, Na, K, NH + 4 , SO 4 , NO − 3 , Cl − and alkalinity. Distinct changes in the chemical composition of precipitation were observed over 14 years (1992–2005). During this time the sulphate concentration decreased significantly, and the concentration of hydrogen ions in precipitation decreased at an average rate of 2.23 meq/m3/yr. There was no significant change in nitrate, ammonium or total nitrogen deposition. The chemical composition of water of both lakes changed significantly and showed signs of chemical recovery with decreases in sulphate concentration and increases in acid neutralising capacity. The concentration of base cations declined. Despite the lack of clear trends in nitrogen deposition, a statistically significant drop in concentration was observed in the two lakes. A significant increase of about 15% in the retention of nitrogen compounds in both catchments occurred. An improvement in nitrogen saturation status in both catchments was observed. This probably resulted mainly from decreasing acidification and global warming which prolongs the vegetative period, changes plant species composition and increases the microbiological activity of soil.

Sulphur and nitrogen fluxes and budgets in the Bohemian Forest and Tatra Mountains during the Industrial Revolution
Major fluxes of sulphur and dissolved inorganic nitrogen were estimated in Central European mountain ecosystems of the Bohemian Forest (forest lakes) and Tatra Mountains (alpine lakes) over the industrial period. Sulphur outputs from these ecosystems were comparable to inputs during a period of relatively stable atmospheric deposition (10-35 mmol m-2 yr-1) around the 1930s. Atmospheric inputs o...

The mean annual transfer (loss and retention) of nitrogen in a river system was estimated using a conceptual approach based on water surface area and runoff. Two different approaches for the calculation of water surface area were applied to determine riverine nitrogen retention in four European catchments, ranging between 860-14,000 km2 in area, and differing considerably in the proportion and ...
متن کاملThe Sources of Carbon and Nitrogen in Mountain Lakes and the Role of Human Activity in Their Modification Determined by Tracking Stable Isotope Composition
We studied the isotopic composition of organic matter in the sediments of eight mountain lakes located in the Tatra Mountains (Western Carpathians, Poland). The sediments of the lakes were fine and course detritus gyttja, mud, and sand. The total organic carbon content varied from 0.5 to 53 %. The C/N ratio indicated that in-lake primary production is the major source of the organic matter in t...

Altogether 445 bats, representing nine species, caught during swarming in the Lodowa Cave in Mount Ciemniak, Western Tatra Mountains, southern Poland, were examined for ectoparasitic mites. In total, 259 spinturnicid (Spinturnix mystacina, S. andegavinus, S. kolenatii, S. plecotinus and S. myoti) and 95 argasid (Carios vespertilionis) mites were collected from seven bat species, Myotis myotis, ...
متن کاملThe effect of phosphorus on nitrogen retention in lakes
A hypothesis has been presented that nitrogen retention in lakes has become less efficient at the same time as phosphorus concentrations have decreased due to high phosphorus reduction in wastewater treatment. This might have led to higher loading of nitrogen into the Baltic Sea where nitrogen is considered to be the minimum nutrient. The hypothesis was tested using the mass balance modelling a...
